TWO DARK BIRDS (cd release) / SIMI STONE
8:00pm (doors at 7:00pm) $10 at the door Two Dark Birds celebrate the release of their new CD "Songs for the New." This new record connects, and powerfully so, largely by virtue of its humble origins and simple intent. "A lot of music, especially indie rock, seems to be saying, 'I'm so much cooler than you,'" comments front man Steve Koester. "We want to do something that exists outside of that. My hope is that these songs touch on something deep-rooted and universal. They definitely come from a specific place, but you don't have to live in the mountains, or have a kid or whatever, to understand them."
locked herself in her room. She emerged three days later with an independently recorded and produced cassette tape titled "Cloudy Day On Mountain Lodge". She handed it out to her grade school classmates, and had wired up third graders singing her songs on the playground. Born and raised in Woodstock, NY by a hippie mom who brought her kids up on brown rice and The Rolling Stones and a Jamaican born father whose mother traveled on the blues circuit playing piano in the south, it's no surprise that Simi Stone ne: Simantha Molly Lou Sernaker has since turned into a formidable power house fueled by a raw and edgy vocal style, virtuoso violin chops and enough charisma to burn down a house.

KELLEIGH McKENZIE / ROBERT BURKE WARREN 8:00pm (doors at 7:00pm) $10 at the door
Armed with a banjo, guitar and amplified stompbox, Kelleigh McKenzie has a way of mixing folk, blues, old-time and rock into a music all her own. Her independently released debut album Chances (2008) garnered national attention, with her song "Gin" winning the 2009 Independent Music Award for Best Americana Song. She also won the 2008 Mountain Stage NewSong Contest. Kelleigh is currently working on her follow-up album and plans to break out several new songs at Vivo.
Singer/songwriter Robert Burke Warren was born and raised in Atlanta, but left for New York City for a career in music, landing a job playing bass for the Fleshtones and RuPaul. Certainly a stepping stone for this stunning poetic musician, his starlet journey didn't stop there. After playing with several other bands, Warren moved to England and was cast as Buddy Holly in the musical Buddy for two years in London's West End. His individual goal came full circle in the new millennium, for Warren issued his plainspoken lovelorn debut ...To This Day on his own label Jackpot. His obvious passion for performing and spirituality was finally captured in the manner he so desperately yearned for early on, growing up down South. |
